The £6m facility will boast a 25m five-lane swimming pool, a gym and fitness suite, a new library, multi-use community and leisure rooms as well as space to provide advice services, training rooms and a community café.

The project forms part of the Council’s Community Hubs programme, which is investing in community services and facilities in priority areas, bringing together a wide range of council and partner services under one roof to make it easier and more convenient for people to access those services.

The pool was designed using reinforced concrete construction in accordance with the requirements of water retaining structures. The key design constraint was differential settlement and the potential for flotation during discharge. The design concept was independently verified by a pool specialist.

The site was adjacent to the Baden Powell Primary School. Reducing the site activities and hence the risk to the local community was of paramount importance. Therefore a steel framed solution with a precast plank floor was adopted so to maximise the off-site manufacture and minimise the onsite construction activities.
