The new NEXT flagship store in Manchester is a three storey building with a total floor area of 7,500m² selling a range of home and garden goods with an adjoining conservatory and outdoor sales area.

The steel framed structure utilised composite floor beams which gave excellent efficiencies over large spans. The lateral stability to the building was provided using a hybrid braced-sway frame and due to the large 11 metre high glazed facades, a 3D design software was utilised to ensure the stringent deflection tolerances were met.

Precast driven piles were used to support the main structure with a fibre reinforced ground bearing slab to allow channels to be easily cut into the slab to accommodate services.

The scheme was developed using a fully BIM compatible software (Revit), which allowed excellent coordination between designer, steel fabricator and cladding supplier.

RVW also undertook the civil engineering aspects of the project consisting of a full drainage scheme which had to accommodate numerous future phases. Ground modelling software was used to optimise the cut and fill across the site.

The NEXT store is phase 1 of the overall development with another two future phases planned consisting largely of retail premises.
